How to format SD card on Android

Every Android phone comes with a SD card for expandable memory. An SD card is a great way to store music, movies and other media to keep your phone’s built in memory open for applications and user data..
If you want to replace the SD card (usually microSD) in your phone you may need to format the card for use on your device.
Android allows you to perform this action right on your phone without need for a computer.
Go to your Android home screen by tapping the Home button on your device.

Hit the Menu button on your Android device to bring up additional options, then tap Settings.

Scroll through the list of Settings until you see the SD & phone storage option. Select it to move forward.

The next screen will give you information regarding the SD card currently installed on your phone, its maximum capacity, available space, etc. The Format SD card option may be grayed out on your device. This is because the card must be “unmounted” first. Tap on Unmount SD card in the menu.

Once the card has been successfully unmounted, the option to format will become available. Tap on Format SD card.
Your Android device will now be able to read and write data to and from the card. Before you format the card, remember that formatting will delete any data already stored on the card.
